Our approach to accessibility is outlined in our online accessibility action plan, and further discussed on this page.
We follow World Wide Web Consortium’s standards as far as possible – a set of global standards designed to make content available to everyone. This includes following their WCAG 1.0 Web Accessibility Initiative guidelines and, as far as possible with new content, we aim to meet their WCAG 2.0 guidelines. We also aim to meet the Australian Government Information Management Office’s mandatory requirements for Australian Government agencies.
As far as possible we have documents and/or summaries of documents available in either HTML and/or PDF formats.
As part of meeting the WCAG 2.0 standards, most information on the site will be provided in HTML format. Some larger documents may be published in an accessible PDF format. If you are unable to view a page, please contact us and we will provide you a version that you can view.
Some material on this site is available in PDF format. We use PDFs because they’re portable, printable and reasonably accessible. A free PDF reader can be downloaded.
If you are vision impaired, go to Adobe’s screen-reader compatible download page. You may also find it helpful to download the Adobe Access plug-in which supports Windows text reading programs.
For more information on PDF document accessibility go to Adobe’s website.
All navigation on this site should be accessible without JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets or graphical images.
Images on this site have meaningful alternative ‘alt’ tags which can be read by screen readers.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority acknowledges the expertise, wisdom, and enduring connections that have informed the guardianship of the Reef for millennia. We pay our respects to the Traditional Owners as the first managers of this land and sea Country, and value their traditional knowledge which continues to inform the current management and stewardship of the Reef for future generations. We pay our respects to the Gurambilbarra Wulgurukaba Traditional Owners on whose land the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium is situated on. We acknowledge their connection to Country and are honoured to be collaborating with the Gurambilbarra Wulgurukaba community to co-design exhibits highlighting culture values and connections to sea Country.
